Over the course of 3 days, a landscaper did trim work, shaping and mulch shoveling and spreading. His helpers worked at different times. They all did this on their off times from their regular landscaping gig. The landscaper said he’d give them the bulk of the money. What do you recommend?

That one is touchy. You don’t really know if the guy really will spread the money evenly, however he really might. My husband is a landscaper and he never tipped with money. A beer or bottled water on a hot day, a bag of garden vedgetables, or something like that is what his customers normally give him. Granted his regulars are mostly seniors he’s worked for for years. But in this area, NC, there isn’t much tipping going on. If one of the crew did an exceptional job, I mean outshined all the others, I might pull him aside with an extra $20 or something.

Any tips on legal, accounting, insurance, taxes, etc. would be great. Landscaping/mowing specific answers would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start Your Own Lawn Care Business (Entrepreneur Magazine’s Start Up) by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* Start & Run A Landscaping Business by Joel LaRusic
* How to Start a Home-Based Landscaping Business, 4th by Owen Dell
* Lawn Care & Gardening: A Down-To-Earth Guide to the Business by Mickey Willis

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I recently read a tip to place wet newspapers on the soil and then put mulch on top. No weeds should come through. I plan to try it in the spring; just wondering if anyone has tried this.

Yes I have, and it works great. Make sure the papers are quite thick and over lap quite well. Water regularily to keep moist and apply a thick cover of mulch. I find it easier than removal by hand and prefer it to chemical methods.
