How to Start a Landscaping Business?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Im very interested in having landscaping as a career. I understand that there are many people in this industry, especially people that just mow lawns, but I am willing to start small and cheap, and learn more and more as I go. I’m 19 years old now, and I know Im too young to start it, but i plan on building up my experience by mowing lawns starting very cheap, and growing a list of clients. I have no actual experience, no money, and only a push mower, electric weed eater, electric hedge cutter and shovels/rakes. Do I need any more equipment to start off small? Maybe an edger? I dont have a trailer for my stuff, only a car that i can use to put the mower in the trunk. How do I get my first client? Or any at all? I dont know anyone that I can start off asking besides strangers, and I dont even have a yard of my own anymore. How do I Start? How many clients should I work up to? Id love to work for a lawncare business for experience, TruGreen is hiring for example, but they want you to be 21 (i dont understand why). After Ive become old enough and have enough clients, maybe some more equipment and experience, whats are the steps to actually making it a real Business? After just mowing lawns what do I branch off into? What do i charge per lawn? I want to keep it cheap at first to guarantee me the job or I wont get any experience or clients, like 20 dollars a yard if it isnt huge. When im 21 should i get a loan and buy a few more things equipment wise, get a website etc? Lets just try to not include how old I am, and answer the question: How Do I Start A Lawncare eventually Landscaping Business From Scratch With No Experience Or Money, part time at first because I work a second shift job. I appreciate absolutely Any advice tips information and answers. thank you

Yes, let’s start small.
Experience wise – local golf course, bank owned property, a church…
Find out the going rate for your area. That means judging the job.
No friends or family to pitch. Yes, you’ll want to offer a good rate, especially for cash, and be ready to go. At the beginning you work on the pitch, offer a one day special and get comfortable talking to strangers. Load up all the equipment and add a broom. Look for houses that need care and practice all your skills. Should put cash in your pocket while you read. Read about finding clients, starting a small business and landscaping.

Hello!! i am researching on how to start my own lawncare business in the California sacramento area. i am very conserned about legal stuff so if you know about that, tell me please!! and i wanna know if ill need any license or insurance?
Please help me with this, any info positive or negative, please help me with anything you know.

Before you spend any money, do a feasibility study and a business plan. Businesses without these face a higher failure rate than those that create them.

I know I have to cover the plants with mulch in the winter but what about doing other things like watering and adding fertilizers? also does anyone have any other useful tips?

All you have to do is use enough mulch to keep the soil and roots from freezing. The tops will probably die back one way or the other, but new plants will grow in the spring. You don’t have to worry about fertilizer or water until the new growth starts next spring.
